What is necessary in your life?
Is your money necessary or your car? How about your house or your job? How bout that brand new plasma tv or that shiny new car, is that necessary?
When we really break it down, what is necessary in your life?
There are things we will not want to live without, then we are surprised that we can and maybe we are better off without those things. A doctor would say that air, food and water are necessary. A psychologist would add safety, security and meaning to that list.
But Jesus in Luke 10:38-42 answers today very differently in the story of Mary and Martha:
Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
There are many things in this life that we get all anxious about, thinking that they are necessary, but Jesus tells us that there is only one thing necessary in all of life both now and eternally. That one thing is a living and loving relationship with Jesus Christ as your savior and Lord.
Everything else is secondary.
Secondary you say! Is money secondary? Yes maybe even more so. My job? Ultimately yes. Breathing is secondary. Breath will come and go but your life in Jesus will never end.
Are you living this way, like Jesus is only what is necessary compared to everything else? If not, why? Everything else will leave you and go away, everything else. Only Jesus will remain and gives you life to that will never die.
Remember that only Jesus is necessary in your life. Live that way, live for Jesus like you live for breathing.
