What is the last thing you would want the people you love to know?
It’s a hard question to answer and one that we try really hard not to think about because it means that is the moment we will die.
I can tell you some things that we would not say. Like son check my stock portfolio just one more time or honey, what happened on last night’s tv show? We wouldn’t because it just doesn’t matter at that point in time. Maybe it really shouldn’t matter as much as it sometimes does.
In our reading this week from John 15 is recorded some of the last words that Jesus would give to his disciples before his arrest and crucifixion.
As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.
What Jesus wanted them to know was how loved they were and how they could abide in that love forever. So, they could be with Jesus forever.
In my last words I would want my loved ones to know those same things, how much I love them but how also how much Jesus loves them and how we could be with each other and Jesus forever. I can’t think of anything more important.
But why wait until it’s the last thing?
Life is fickle and so much can happen that we can’t control. Tell the people right now, when you finish this message, that you love them, Jesus loves them, and in faith you can be together forever.
